Speaker of the Seimas: the EU should show vigilance and solidarity on regional security

Press release, 24 April 2018

During his address at the EU Speakers Conference on 24 April 2018, Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, reminded the audience of the real threats to the Baltic States and the entire EU and stressed the need to ensure due funding for maintaining security and stability in all Member States.

‘We should ensure collective security, military mobility, and demographic and energy stability for all citizens of the Union through rapid reaction and solidarity with all Member States at all times,’ Mr Pranckietis said at the Conference.

In his words, the Astravyets nuclear power plant located barely 20 km away from the EU’s border is a real hybrid threat to the region. Therefore, substantial funding should be allocated to EU’s comprehensive security, including its physical, social, and moral dimensions.

The EU Speakers Conference is the last event of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Next, the Federal Council of Austria is due to take over the Presidency of the Conference. The Conference meets each spring in the country that held the Council Presidency during the second semester of the previous year.
