Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas: “Ukraine and Lithuania share a common goal to work for the sake of democracy and unity in Europe”

Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Andriy Parubiy, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and Ukrainians all over the world on Independence Day of Ukraine.

“Ukraine and Lithuania share a common goal to work for the sake of democracy and unity in Europe. Therefore, the friendly and constructive bond between our people is constantly getting deeper. This bond also underpins Lithuania’s resolute position on Ukraine’s right to freely choose its future alongside with other free and democratic states. Lithuania has supported and will support the aforementioned aspiration of Ukraine as a well as Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the congratulatory letter of the Speaker of the Seimas reads.

On 24 August 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence, which was approved in a national referendum a week later.
