Speaker of the Seimas: ‘The Baltic Way gave birth to the courage that could not be suppressed in any way’

Press release, 23 August 2019

On the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way, Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, has extended his congratulations to those who organised, witnessed and participated in this historic event and to all Lithuanian people.

‘The Baltic nations were sharing their warmth, hopes and dreams through the palms pressed along as many as six hundred kilometres – this gave birth to the enormous courage that could not be supressed in any way. The Baltic Way has never worn out and it never will. It will keep sending us a message of free thought. It will also keep sending us a message of the freedom that we have aspired for and that we will always defend,’ states the Speaker of the Seimas in his congratulatory address.

On the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way, the Speaker of the Seimas has drawn attention to the then historically unprecedented joint endeavour of the people from the three countries and the unique nature of this unity.

‘The Baltic Way has become proof of the independence of our countries and our people. Standing in peace, feeling a sense of togetherness, holding each other’s hands and singing songs, we jointly entered a new stage in our life. In the same unity and peace, we continue moving forward,’ says the Speaker of the Seimas.
