Speaker of the Seimas calls on the Parliaments of the EU and NATO countries to adopt resolutions on the aggression of Russia and Belarus against Ukraine
Press release, 25 February 2022
On 25 February 2022, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, sent a letter to the Presidents of Parliaments of the EU and NATO countries informing them about the Resolution on the Aggression of Russia and Belarus against Ukraine adopted at the extraordinary sitting of the Seimas the day before and called for adoption of similar documents.
‘Ukraine needs every possible assistance, including military, economic, political, humanitarian, and legal, as well as the EU and NATO membership. Meanwhile Russia must be cut off from the rest of the world by all possible immediate measures, such as the termination of its membership of international organisations, severe personal and sectoral sanctions, and disconnection from the SWIFT global interbank payments system. Therefore, I have called on the Presidents of Parliaments to follow Lithuania’s example to ensure that the international community takes coordinated action as soon as possible,’ said the Speaker of the Seimas.
On Monday, 28 February 2022, Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen is meeting with Presidents of Parliaments of the Baltic States and the Kingdom of Sweden in Riga. The meeting intends to discuss the concrete steps to ensure that all the efforts are immediately focused on three priorities, namely, comprehensive assistance to Ukraine, firm response to Russia, and strengthening of security in the region.
