The Speaker of the Seimas: ‘The EU must send a clear signal to Ukraine on its membership’

Press release, 29 May 2022

At the meeting on Sunday evening with the Ukrainian delegation participating in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, said that, by answering a questionnaire on EU membership in record time, Ukraine proved that its administration was working well even during wartime.

‘Today I have reiterated Lithuania’s strong support for Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations. We understand that this is a long process. But it is not enough that the world admires the heroism and determination of Ukrainians in Russia’s barbaric war. Nor is it enough to provide political, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine. There can be no question of trading Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty for the Kremlin’s favour. Therefore, the European Union must send a clear political signal of support to Ukraine and reaffirm that the EU’s doors are open to Ukraine,’ said Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen after the meeting.

According to the Speaker of the Seimas, it must be admitted that the measures taken so far by the EU have not stopped Putin. Russia’s behaviour can only be changed by continued military assistance and even greater sanctions, the most important of which is the energy independence of the EU.

‘I noted that an important step is the REPowerEU Plan, which will reform the EU’s energy structure and stop the financing of the Russian military machine through its energy imports. Lithuania was the first EU Member State to stop Russian energy imports. The forthcoming sixth package of sanctions will solve a number of problems. But we also need to think about a seventh package of sanctions,’ said the Speaker of the Seimas.

Plans to quickly rebuild Ukraine and the resources needed to do so, mechanisms for the prosecution of war crimes and the Ukrainian people fleeing war were also discussed at the meeting.
