On behalf of the Seimas and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, has congratulated the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia on the 105th anniversary of declaration of Latvia’s independence. In her letter to Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen extended her wishes for consistent work and harmonious efforts in fostering democracy, as well as the wishes for determination and courage in defending the fundamental values on the international stage.

‘With hindsight to the way already covered and with regard to the current developments in the world, where trampling on democracy, breaking of the principles of international law, and violations of human rights and freedoms still persist in some countries, we can clearly understand that the fundamental values remain unchanged and that even a single country’s tenacity, persistence, and courage may alter the course of history,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen writes in her letter.
