Activities of the Permanent Representative of the Seimas to the EU
The Permanent Representative of the Seimas to the EU assists in enhancing and developing the co-operation between the Seimas and the EU institutions, as well as provides information to the EU institutions about the activities of the Seimas, and regularly informs the Seimas about the activities of the EU institutions.
The legal grounds for appointment, activities and the end of activities as well as the legal status of a Permanent Representative of the Seimas to the EU are governed by the Law on the Permanent Representative of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania to the European Union.
Appointment of the Permanent Representative of the Seimas to the EU
The Representative of the Seimas to the EU is appointed for a three-year term of office by the decision of the Secretary General of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, on the recommendation of the Board of the Seimas, with the written approval of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and in compliance with Article 19 of the Law on Civil Service. The Chair of the Seimas Committee on European Affairs presents to the Board of the Seimas a candidate for the representative, after consultation with the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs and taking into consideration the results of deliberation in the Committee on European Affairs.
Term of office of the Representative of the Seimas to the EU
On 19 February 2003, Ms Rūta Bunevičiūtė was the first to be appointed as the then Representative of the Seimas to the European Parliament.

Functions of the Representative of the Seimas to the EU
The Representative of the Seimas to the EU is responsible for:
1) regularly informing the Seimas, the Committees of the Seimas, and the Board of the Seimas about the activities of the European Parliament, Council, Commission, Court of Justice and the Court of Auditors;
2) informing the Seimas, the Committees of the Seimas, and the Board of the Seimas about the activities of other EU institutions in relation with matters topical to Lithuania;
3) providing information to the EU institutions about the activities of the Seimas;
4) participating in sessions of the European Parliament, sittings and hearings held by the Committees, meetings of political groups, and other events; and, in cooperation with the relevant Committees, Commissions and divisions of the Seimas and within his competence, organising the cooperation between the Seimas and the European Parliament;
5) participating in hearings and deliberations held by other EU institutions and meetings held by working groups on important political matters;
6) cooperating and coordinating his activities with the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU;
7) participating in meetings of Speakers of EU parliaments, meetings of the Secretaries General of EU parliaments, meetings of the Conference of Community and European Affairs Committees of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC), and other important joint events of the institutions, as well as in events and working groups, if appropriate, organised by the Seimas;
8) in cooperation with the appropriate divisions of the Seimas and within his competence, organising visits of members of the Seimas to the EU institutions;
9) at the end of a regular session of the Seimas, producing his activity report and submitting it to the Seimas Committee on European Affairs, the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Secretary General of the Seimas, and the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU;
10) at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other institutions of the Republic of Lithuania, providing them with the information on his activities;
11) rational use of the funds appropriated for his activities in the institutions of the EU.
