About the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean

 

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) provides an opportunity for multilateral cooperation among elected representatives of the European Union and its Southern Mediterranean partner countries. 

 

The PA-UfM advances the visibility and transparency of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership; alignment of the work of the Union for the Mediterranean with public interest and expectation; democratic legitimacy of cooperation within the Mediterranean region; and dialogue between Israel, Palestine and other Arab elected officials.

 

Seimas delegations to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean

 

Lithuania has three seats in the PA-UfM. A member of the Delegation may have a substitute. The substitute, however, may participate in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly only when the full member of the Delegation is absent.  

The Seimas has been engaged in the activities of the Assembly since 2004. On 5 March 2004, the Seimas approved the members of its first Delegation to the PA-UfM. On 21–24 March 2004, the Seimas Delegation, headed by Mr Vaclovas Stankevičius, participated in the inaugural sitting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of the Mediterranean, held in Athens, Hellenic Republic.

 

Funding

The budget of the PA-UfM consists of contributions paid by each member parliament of the Assembly. In 2013, Lithuania’s contribution accounted for EUR 7,678. Since then, Lithuania has not been required to pay any contributions.

On 8 December 2020, pursuant to Article 81(1) of its Statute, the Seimas, formed 10 parliamentary delegations, including the Seimas Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, for the 2020–2024 legislative period. The Seimas approved Mr Arminas Lydeka as Head of the Delegation and Mr Algirdas Butkevičius as his Deputy.
