Speaker of the Seimas congratulated Latvia on the centenary of its independence
Press release, 18 November 2018
Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Latvian Saeima, and all people of Latvia, on the 100th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia.
“Our people refer to each other as ‘siblings’. It is not only the sense of ethnic affinity that we share. Lithuanians and Latvians are branches of the same tree, sharing the same roots of cultural traditions and the centuries-long history,” pointed out the Speaker of the Seimas.
The Speaker of the Seimas stressed that Lithuania and Latvia had never veered off the shared course, and that effective and constructive relations had continued to the present day.
The Speaker of the Seimas emphasised that he was gratified by the excellent relations between Lithuania and Latvia. He was convinced that the close cooperation at the bilateral level and support in developing multilateral formats made our countries stronger, as speaking with one voice made us more audible.
At noon on Sunday, 18 November 2018, the Speaker of the Seimas took part in a solemn ceremony of hoisting the flags of Lithuania and Latvia in Lukiškių Square to mark the centenary of Latvia’s independence.
