During his visit to the Republic of Poland on 27 January 2020, Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, participated in the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
‘75 years have passed since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, but the scars of Holocaust still remain deep today, both in the souls of the Holocaust survivors and in our societies where we can still hear grievous words now and then. We are paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, extending condolences to their family members and acknowledging history without distortion. We must never forget this human tragedy, which strongly affected our country and our people. We must consistently confront the evil of anti-Semitism,’ said the Speaker of the Parliament.
The commemoration of the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was attended by more than 200 death camp and Holocaust survivors and 120 state leaders and representatives.
Between 1940 and 1945, around 1.5 million people were killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, situated in the Polish territory occupied by Nazi Germany. The concentration camp was liberated on 27 January 1945.
