When speaking about the future of Europe at the 31st Economic Forum in Karpacz, Poland, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, said that much would now depend on our own actions, choices and decisions. She called for strategic patience to be maintained, as the shock of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an opportunity for Europe to grow stronger in all its dimensions: security, energy, economy, information, Western solidarity and cohesion.

‘This difficult period offers opportunities for Europe to grow stronger, more mobilised and more united. It is a great opportunity to change the decades-old thinking about energy, economic independence and security, so that we not only survive this period but never ever fear any blackmail again. After all, the only lever Putin currently has is the economic one with which he tries to act in Europe and divide societies,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen said.

On the other hand, the war in Ukraine has only highlighted that Europe’s dependence on Russian energy has long been vulnerable, and has now led, albeit belatedly, to rapid changes.

‘The energy disruption has boosted imports and the use of renewable energy sources. Although the economic dependence on Russia is not so high, it is necessary to rethink Europe’s reliance on other countries as well. I am referring to strategic economic autonomy, including the independence of new logistics and supply chains as well as strengthening of the internal market of the European Union and technological competitiveness,’ said Ms  Čmilytė-Nielsen.

According to the Speaker of the Seimas, Putin’s ultimate goal is not war, but rather Russia’s dominance and disruption of the world order.

‘Therefore, let us seize this opportunity to strengthen Europe. Of course, the most important thing is the victory of Ukraine now. It will not be quick and easy, just like this autumn and the coming winter. However, I have no doubt that spring is going to be brighter. And let us not forget that the Ukrainians are paying for the future and freedom with their lives, while we are paying just at the expense of our comfort.’
