Speaker of the Seimas: ‘NATO Parliaments must take on leadership’

Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Margus Tsahkna, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, on his working visit to Lithuania. The topics discussed at the meeting included inter-parliamentary cooperation between Lithuania and Estonia on a bilateral level and within multilateral formats, such as the Baltic Assembly, the NB8, and others, as well as security, sanctions against Russia and Belarus, and matters related to the war in Ukraine.

‘At the moment, the main focus of such meetings is the upcoming NATO Summit and the related preparations. We discussed the High Level Meeting of Speakers of Parliaments of NATO Member Countries, Sweden, and Ukraine to be held in Vilnius on 1­–3 June 2023. It is Speakers of Parliaments who must currently demonstrate leadership in setting the agenda for the NATO Summit and in taking key decisions on the unity, resilience, and security of the Alliance,’ said Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen.
