Speaker of the Seimas congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day

Press release, 24 August 2023

On behalf of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Ukraine and its people on the occasion of Independence Day. In her congratulatory letter to Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen emphasised that the cost of freedom can never be too high and the fight for it is never convenient.

‘There can be no conformism in the fight for freedom. Ukrainians are shedding blood for their independence and for their land, which clearly demonstrates the great lengths to which this courageous nation is willing to go. Having set an example of perseverance and dedication for many countries, today Ukraine is celebrating its independence unbroken and unbent despite being 18 months at war. Ukraine is proud and aware that it stands as a shield for democracy,’ the Speaker’s congratulatory letter reads.
