Speaker of the Seimas: ‘We commend Iceland for its support and advocate for permanent remembrance of historical lessons’

Press release, 11 February 2024

Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, reflects on the profound significance of 11 February over the past 33 years, recognising it as a day symbolising courage and gratitude to Iceland. This date serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal choice made three decades ago, an affirmation that by choosing freedom Lithuania made the best choice it could have made, and a testament to enduring importance of historical lessons.

‘On 11 February 1991, the Althingi, Iceland’s Parliament, adopted the resolution formally recognising Lithuania’s independence. Despite being a small nation, Iceland boldly led the way as the first foreign country to acknowledge our sovereignty. Given the context and challenges of the time, this historic step and act of courage remains deeply appreciated,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen emphasises.

She underscores the importance of this anniversary as a reaffirmation of Lithuania’s courageous and righteous choice to pursue independence. The knowledge that Lithuania was not alone has consistently strengthened and supported the country.

‘Our joint joyful celebration today not only honours our past, but also underscores the ongoing need to heed the lessons of history. The learning needs to be permanent and conclusions need to be drawn on a regular basis. Just as Lithuania once sought assistance, Ukraine has been seeking international aid and support for almost two years now,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen says. ‘Distinctions between nations should not hinder collective action. Bravery knows no size or status; it is a universal virtue. There can be no delay, and Lithuania is a standing proof of this.’
