THE SEIMAS FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN MR EMANUELIS ZINGERIS: “THE ARCTIC POLICY

SHOULD BE AMONG THE PRIORITIES OF THE LITHUANIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL”

 

On 16–17 September 2012, Emanuelis Zingeris, Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, paid a visit to Iceland where he attended a traditional meeting of Chairmen of Foreign Affairs Committees of the Nordic and Baltic States.

 

At the meeting, the Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs voiced hope that Iceland would have concluded EU accession negotiations by the end of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in December 2013. He emphasised that the Arctic policy which was relevant to the Nordic countries, Iceland in particular, should be included among the priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council, while seeking to overcome the economic and financial crisis, the European Union should make use of the successful methods for economic recovery employed by the Baltic States and Iceland...

THE SEIMAS COMMEMORATED THE 80TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF ALGIRDAS MYKOLAS BRAZAUSKAS, PRESIDENT, SIGNATORY TO THE ACT OF INDEPENDENCE OF LITHUANIA

 

 

 

 

 

On 20 September 2012, the Seimas commemorated the 80th birth anniversary of Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas, President, Signatory to the Act of Independence, 12th and 13th Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania.

 

Upon opening the solemn sitting, Seimas Speaker Irena Degutienė noted that Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas was undoubtedly one of the politicians, whose personality and political activity would be the object of research for many political scientists, historians, and sociologists looking into the 20th and 21st century history of the state of Lithuania, its historical transformation from the totalitarian regime and occupation to a free and democratic country.

 

‘In many cases, Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas was a direct actor and decision-maker in the new history of the country. Historically, he will always be the only unsurpassable, who was destined to be the First Secretary of the Lithuanian Communist Party, Signatory to the Act of Independence, Speaker of the Seimas, President of Lithuania, and Prime Minister of Lithuania. Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas died two years ago, on 26 June 2010…

SEIMAS SPEAKER PRESENTS THE DRAFT PROGRAMME AND PRIORITIES OF THE SEIMAS REGULAR AUTUMN SESSION

Seimas Speaker Mrs Irena Degutienė presented a draft work programme and priorities of the 9th regular autumn session, the last one for the current-term MPs. The Speaker stressed that the draft programme included as few as 262 draft legal acts, however, she added that it would not be easy to implement even such a shortened programme during the sittings scheduled… 

 

 

THE SEIMAS ADOPTED THE LAW ON THE COUNCIL OF CULTURE

 

The Seimas adopted the Law on the Lithuanian Council of Culture with 68 votes in favour, 10 against, and 20 abstentions. This document sets out the status, operational objectives, functions, and organisational structure of the Lithuanian Council of Culture (hereinafter referred to as the Council). The Council will be a budgetary institution under the Ministry of Culture that, within the scope of its competence, implements national policy falling under the competence of the Minister of Culture…

 

 

THE SEIMAS REJECTS THE PROPOSAL TO ALLOW THE LITHUANIAN CITIZENS LIVING ABROAD TO VOTE ONLINE

 

The Seimas decided to reject amendments to the Law on Elections to the European Parliament, Law on Presidential Elections, Law on Referendum and Law on Elections to the Seimas which suggested to introduce a new form of voting, i.e. voting online, and to grant the Lithuanian citizens abroad the right to use it…

 

 

 

  INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

 

STATEMENT ON BELARUS‘ REFUSAL TO ISSUE A VISA TO CHAIRMAN OF THE SEIMAS COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS TO OBSERVE ELECTIONS AS PART OF THE OECD MISSION

 

The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas, having regard to the information on the denial of a visa by the Republic of Belarus to Mr Emanuelis Zingeris, Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, who planned to join the observer mission of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe to monitor the parliamentary elections in Belarus, scheduled on 21-24 September 2012, believes that the decision of Belarus authorities is incomprehensible and unjustified, and that it does not contribute to building and development of good neighbourly relations between the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Belarus...

               

 

 

 

 

 

 

SEIMAS SPEAKER: "WE ARE HAPPY TO REVIVE SLIGHTLY WEAKENED PARLIAMENTARY RELATIONS BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND GERMANY”

Seimas Speaker Mrs Irena Degutienė received Mr Ruprecht Polenz, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the German Bundestag. Their discussion centred on bilateral cooperation, EU foreign policy affairs and Eastern Neighbourhood issues. The Speaker recalled her visit to Germany and meetings at the Bundestag. “I am happy that the meetings at the Bundestag during my visit to Germany this spring helped to revive slightly weakened bilateral parliamentary relations. We are also pleased that politicians from Germany –– one of the leading European Union countries –– come to Lithuania more often,” Mrs Degutienė said...

THE EVENT TO MARK THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND INDIA

 

 

On 7 September 2012, the Seimas hosted a solemn event to mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and India and the second anniversary of the Lithuania – India Forum. The event was attended by Dangutė Mikutienė, Chair of the Group for Interparliamentary Relations with the Republic of India, Monika Kapil Mohta, Ambassador of India, and other distinguished guests.

                                                             

 

THE DELEGATION OF THE NATIONAL PEOPLE’S CONGRESS OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF

CHINA VISITED THE SEIMAS

 

On 10-11 September 2012, the delegation led by Yan Junqi, Vice-Chairperson of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, visited the Seimas.
